  3. <hi style=afpcap>Another P-38 Lightning development, a single prototype of the XP-49 was ordered in 1940. The aircraft was fitted with Continental XIV-1430-13 engines and a pressurised cockpit, together with an armament of two 20 mm cannon and four 0.50 inch guns. The XP-49 was operated at Wright Field, Ohio performing high altitude research and cabin pressure development work.</hi>
